The Investment Implications of Unsustainable Sovereign Debt in a Higher-Rate World

Historically, periods of high debt rarely resolve smoothly. The question for investors may not be whether debt matters, but whether portfolios remain positioned for a world increasingly shaped by fiscal constraints.

Key questions this research addresses

Why is global sovereign debt an issue for investors?

Periods of elevated debt are often associated with higher inflation, interest rate volatility, and policy constraints that can alter the behavior of traditional asset classes.

Is it really a major concern?

Yes. In recent years, many investors have viewed fiscal policy as a background variable. Over the next decade, it may become one of the primary drivers of market outcomes.

What actions should investors take?

Rather than waiting for market confirmation of a regime change, we believe investors should begin reviewing their strategic portfolio allocations today. Fiscal policy may contribute to higher volatility and weaker stock-bond diversification and provide a greater role for real assets, alternatives, and active management.

What is the risk of doing nothing?

The greatest risk may not be a sovereign debt crisis. It could be that investors remain positioned for a market regime that no longer exists. The new investment regime brings new considerations, return drivers, and opportunities to enhance and protect portfolios.
